As one of the five important temples/shrines of the Nguyen Dynasty, Phung Tien Temple was originally named Hoang Nhan Temple, built in the 13th year of Gia Long (1814), north of Trieu Temple, to worship Queen Thua Thien Cao - the legal wife of Emperor Gia Long. Later, the temple became a place to worship emperors and queens of the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1829, Emperor Minh Mang renamed Phung Tien Temple and in 1837, moved Phung Tien Temple to its present location. At this time, the structure of Phung Tien Temple was built according to "The Mieu method, changed into 9 compartments, the temple in the front, the palace in the back".

Phung Tien Temple campus includes 5 main works: main hall, East - West (Phôi Dien) halls, Left - Right (Tong Vien) halls and many other affiliated works such as systems of gate, doors, front screen, rockery pool…

From 2017 up to now, Phung Tien Temple compound has been restored through a cooperation project between Vietnam and Germany to preserve the remaining structures and revive the original shape and function of the compound.

From 2020 - 2023, the project has preserved and restored the portal, front screen, and walls surrounding the building, recreating the image of this monument through the virtual restoration of the overall architecture of Phung Tien Temple. This phase also provided technical training for 11 project learners who are artists and skilled craftsmen in Thua Thien Hue Province; Organise exploration of the Phung Tien Temple relics for 13 classes with nearly 200 students with programmes such as: "Colouring heritage, Preserving heritage; Hue Art memory game; 3D creation; Frescoc - Traditional painting technique for murals, building decoration and restoration", especially virtual reconstruction in the form of visual overlay of the existing space with a graphic model of the Phung Tien Temple compound.
